ROCK thru to more awe through music
ABUNDANT LIVING SERIES
by Lee Havenga | November 14, 2024
We’ve all felt awe holding a newborn or gazing over the Grand Canyon—those powerful moments that lift us outside ourselves. But awe isn’t limited to rare experiences; we can bring it into daily life through simple practices like listening to music. According to Dacher Keltner, a psychologist at the University of California, Berkeley, awe arises when we encounter vast mysteries beyond our understanding, shifting our focus outward. Awe not only feels good; research shows it boosts well-being, reduces stress, and inspires altruism.
How Awe in Music Inspires Kindness
Music’s ability to inspire awe can foster feelings of altruism—the selfless desire to help others. Research led by Qihao Ji, a scholar of awe and media psychology, has identified awe-evoking compositions like “Victory” by Thomas J. Bergersen and Nick Phoenix as particularly effective at inducing awe. This orchestral piece, with its sweeping crescendos and powerful harmonies, can transport listeners to an elevated emotional state, often sparking feelings of connection and kindness.
According to Keltner’s research, awe works by “softening the boundaries of the self,” allowing us to see ourselves as part of a larger whole. The experience of awe in music can help us gain perspective, reduce self-focused thoughts, and become more attuned to the needs of others. In turn, this openness fosters an urge to reach out, offer support, or simply brighten someone’s day through kind actions.
“Music is a moral law. It gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, a charm to sadness, and life to everything”
— Plato
