ROCK thru to more wisdom to change
ABUNDANT LIVING SERIES
by Lee Havenga | October 3, 2024
Finding the wisdom to change often begins when we confront the uncomfortable truth that something in our lives isn’t working. “What am I doing? I can’t keep going like this.” These words often come after we’ve hit a wall in our lives—whether a difficult situation, harsh truths, or the consequences of choices we wish we could take back. One of the hardest parts of being human is realizing that while free will gives us choices, we also have the choice to change.
The truth is, difficult times bring the most wisdom to change because they force us to stop, reflect, and take action. But how can we gain that wisdom without waiting for a painful wake-up call? In this Abundant Living series article, we’ll explore how the ROCK thru principle of Connection can help us gain that wisdom in advance. By asking four simple but profound questions, you can uncover the wisdom you need to change and live a more fulfilling life.
God, grant me the serenity to accept the people I cannot change
the courage to change the one I can
and the wisdom to know that one is me.

CONNECTION

Apply it
What is Wisdom?
Wisdom is the ability to make sound judgments based on knowledge, experience, and self-awareness. It’s not simply about intelligence or knowing facts—it’s about seeing the bigger picture, learning from mistakes, and making decisions that lead to growth and positive change. According to research by Dong and Fournier, “Wisdom entails being flexible in one’s thinking, the tendency and willingness to take on different ideas and perspectives, and an orientation toward exploration, psychological growth, and personal fulfillment.”
Now, let’s explore how the principle of Connection can help us gain the wisdom to change, starting with how we connect with ourselves, others, and God.
Apply it: 1. Connection to Self
The first and most crucial step in gaining the wisdom to change is developing a deeper connection with yourself. Self-awareness is the foundation of wisdom because it helps you understand your own thoughts, emotions, and motivations. When you’re disconnected from yourself, you’re more likely to act out of habit or emotion rather than wisdom.
Ask Yourself: “What am I avoiding?”
This is a tough but essential question. Often, the things we avoid—difficult conversations, uncomfortable truths, or unresolved pain—are the very things that hold us back from meaningful change. To gain the wisdom to change, you must first face the reality of what you’ve been avoiding. Start by journaling or meditating on this question, allowing yourself to confront the discomfort so you can move forward.
2. Connection to Others
We gain wisdom not only from introspection but also from the people around us. Whether through feedback, advice, or simply observing others’ experiences, our Connections with others are a vital source of learning. However, it requires humility and openness to listen to and learn from others.
Ask Others: “What do you see that I don’t?”
We all have blind spots, and sometimes, the people closest to us can see patterns or behaviors we’re too close to recognize. Asking someone you trust for honest feedback can help uncover truths about yourself, leading to greater wisdom and growth. Be ready to listen without defensiveness—this is where true wisdom starts.
3. Connection to Spirit
Finally, wisdom often comes from something beyond ourselves. For many, this source of wisdom is a Connection to God or a higher power. Spirituality offers a broader perspective, reminding us that we are part of something greater and that our challenges are opportunities for growth and transformation.
Ask God: “What is the lesson in this?”
When faced with difficulties or life challenges, spiritual guidance can help you find the deeper meaning in your experiences. Through prayer, meditation, or quiet reflection, ask for the wisdom to understand what life is teaching you in this moment. Trust that there is always a purpose behind every experience, and the wisdom to change comes from embracing that lesson.
By strengthening your Connection to yourself, others, and God, you can gain the wisdom to change without waiting for life’s most painful moments to force it upon you. Each Connection provides a unique source of insight and clarity, guiding you toward the changes that can lead to a more fulfilling and authentic life.
And the last, most important question is: Will I listen to the wisdom?
ROCK thru with more wisdom to change and discover lasting growth and freedom on the other side.
