ABUNDANT LIVING SERIES
by Lee Havenga | February 22, 2024
We’ve all experienced those moments when our minds take us on a wild goose chase, leading us down rabbit holes of worry and doubt. Maybe it’s the embarrassing thing you said at a social gathering that keeps replaying in your mind, making you cringe with regret. Or it’s the looming deadline at work that has you second-guessing your abilities and stressing over the outcome. And let’s not forget about the endless stream of “what ifs” that flood our thoughts late at night, keeping us awake and anxious about the future. These everyday situations may seem small, but they are stealing our mental peace. They have a way of taking over our minds and consuming our mental energy, leaving us feeling exhausted and overwhelmed.
Welcome to another installment of the Abundant Living series, where we delve into the transformative potential of applying the four ROCK thru principles to live a more meaningful life full of all of the good things.
“Your inner growth is completely dependent upon the realization that the only way to find peace and contentment is to stop thinking about yourself.”
— Michael A. Singer
RESPECT

Apply it
Honor yourself by recognizing that you are unconditionally valuable even when your mind is in turmoil. Give yourself permission to step back from the chaos and prioritize your well-being.
OWNERSHIP

Apply it
Take Ownership of your thoughts by practicing awareness, acceptance, and action. When negative emotions arise, acknowledge them without judgment, and then practice the “relax and release” technique, as shared by Michael Singer in his book, The Untethered Soul: The Journey Beyond Yourself. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you implement this powerful practice for more mental peace:
Be Aware: Begin by becoming aware of emotional disturbances as they arise. Notice the thoughts and feelings that trigger a sense of unrest within you. Instead of trying to suppress or ignore these emotions, allow yourself to fully experience them without judgment.
Accept: Once you’ve identified the emotional disturbance, objectively accept and acknowledge its presence. Recognize that these thoughts and feelings are a natural part of the human experience and that you are not defined by them. Instead of resisting or fighting against these emotions, surrender to their presence with an attitude of acceptance.
Take Action – Relax and Release: The most crucial step is taking action to release these negative emotions. Michael Singer teaches that the key to freeing yourself from emotional turmoil is to “relax and release.”
Here's how you can practice this technique:
- Relax your muscles: Start by consciously relaxing any tense muscles. Take a few deep breaths and let go of any physical tension you may be holding onto.
- Identify the tension: Tune into your body and pinpoint the specific areas where you feel stress or discomfort. Bring your awareness to these sensations without judgment or resistance.
- Focus your attention: Direct your attention to the sensation of tension in your body. Allow yourself to fully experience it without trying to change it or make it go away.
- Release the energy: Finally, let go of the tension and allow it to dissipate naturally. Surrender to the experience and trust that the suppressed energy will release on its own.
By practicing the “relax and release” technique, you can liberate yourself from the grip of negative emotions and cultivate a greater sense of inner peace and freedom. Remember, the journey to emotional mastery may take time and practice. Be patient with yourself as you navigate this process.
CONNECTION

Apply it
Foster a deeper Connection with yourself and others by disconnecting from the incessant chatter of your mind. Lean away from negative thoughts and lean into the present moment, where true peace resides.
KINDNESS

Apply it
Kindness: Be kind to yourself by deliberately calming your mind and releasing negative emotions. Cultivate a spirit of generosity towards yourself, granting the invaluable gift of inner tranquility.
Embrace the power of the ROCK thru principles in finding calm amidst the chaos of your racing mind. Recognizing and releasing negative emotions can cultivate a sense of calm and contentment that transcends life’s challenges. Let’s ROCK thru together and find more mental peace in the chaos!
