ROCK thru to happier living: Key 7 - Resilience
by Lee Havenga | August 31, 2023
Life is an unpredictable journey, filled with twists, turns, and unexpected challenges that can leave us feeling both exhilarated and overwhelmed. How we respond to these ups and downs plays a significant role in shaping our overall well-being. In pursuing a happier and more fulfilling life, science tells us that embracing resilience is a crucial factor. Resilience, the ability to bounce back from setbacks and adapt to changes, is one of the 10 Keys to Happier Living, an insightful framework developed by the Action for Happiness organization.
The 10 Keys to Happier Living collectively form the acronym GREAT DREAM. “R” stands for Resilience. Resilience empowers us to not only overcome challenges but also to use them as opportunities for growth. According to Action for Happiness, developing resilience enables us to maintain our sense of self-worth and take Ownership of our circumstances, which are vital components for a happier life.
A change in circumstances doesn’t change your value.
RESPECT
Apply it
Four ways to deepen self-Respect
as the foundation for resiliency.
- Practice Self-Compassion: Treat yourself with the same kindness you’d extend to a friend. Acknowledge your struggles and offer yourself words of encouragement.
- Set Boundaries: Establishing healthy boundaries ensures you prioritize your well-being. Say no when needed to allocate time for self-care, giving yourself renewed energy to face the change.
- Positive Affirmations: Regularly remind yourself of your inherent worth. Reinforce your self-belief and confidence with affirmations such as, “A change in circumstances doesn’t change my value.”
- Gratitude Practice: Cultivate gratitude for your strengths, experiences, and the lessons challenges bring. Gratitude reinforces your sense of value.
OWNERSHIP
Apply it
Four ways to use the first step of Ownership, becoming aware, to foster resiliency.
- Seek Perspective: When facing a challenge, connect with a friend or mentor who can provide an objective viewpoint. This can help you see beyond the cloud of emotions and focus on the facts.
- Journaling: Writing down your thoughts and feelings about the challenge can provide clarity. It allows you to examine the situation from a more detached standpoint.
- Mindfulness Practice: Use mindfulness techniques to ground yourself in the present moment, not ruminating over the past or worrying about the future. This can help you observe the challenge without excessive judgment or reactivity.
- Research and Analysis: Gather information about the challenge and its potential solutions. Knowledge equips you with a solid foundation for creating a plan.
As we navigate the complexities of life, resilience emerges as our guiding light to happier living. It’s the force that empowers us to see beyond the hurdles and embrace challenges as stepping stones toward growth. By giving ourselves unconditional Respect and taking Ownership of our situations, we lay the foundation for resilience.
You can ROCK thru to happier living with resilience. XO ~ Lee
