ROCK thru to more happiness: Key 9 – Acceptance

by Lee Havenga | September 14, 2023

In the tapestry of life, we are all unique beings, each woven from a distinct thread of strengths and weaknesses. Our unique strengths make us each beautiful, and leveraging others’ uniqueness fosters healthy interdependence among our families, friends, work environments, and communities. When we wholeheartedly accept who we naturally are and value what we offer to the world, we embark on a journey towards a more content and fulfilling life. This isn’t fluff; it’s proven by the Action for Happiness organization, based on the latest research, which has identified ten keys to happier living.

The ninth key, the second A in the acronym ‘GREAT DREAM,’ is ‘Acceptance.’ It’s not merely acknowledging that we are unique but also appreciating and embracing these characteristics. According to Action for Happiness (2023), acceptance is fundamental to a happier life when you explore and apply your signature strengths.

Opening our hearts and minds to acceptance unlocks the potential for more profound emotional well-being.

RESPECT

This ROCK thru principle is all about showing unconditional value for yourself and others. Acceptance starts with self-love and valuing ourselves for who we are, regardless of circumstances or external judgments. We must learn to grant ourselves grace, compassion, and acceptance, recognizing that growth is a continual process. Embrace the “progress, not perfection” mantra in all your endeavors.

OWNERSHIP

Apply it

Ownership is about taking action with a balanced perspective after accepting the truths of a situation. When it comes to self-acceptance, this means acknowledging your natural character strengths while accepting those characteristics that may not come naturally to you.

To help you on this part of the journey, you can explore a list of character strengths and discover yours with a free assessment. Here are my top 5:

CONNECTION

Apply it

Connecting with yourself forms a positive, reciprocal bond. It means silencing your inner critic and nurturing a kinder internal dialogue. Here are four techniques to try:

  1. Visualize a stop sign when self-criticism starts, and consciously redirect your thoughts.

  2. Replace self-criticism with positive affirmations and self-encouragement.

  3. Focus on your strengths and past achievements instead of fixating on perceived flaws.

  4. Engage in mindfulness meditation to distance yourself from critical thoughts.

KINDNESS

Apply it

Kindness extends not only to others but also to yourself. Practice generous self-consideration through your actions. Be your own source of encouragement and support by asking your kind inner friend for advice when you are in difficult situations or regretting actions or inactions. (Hint: It’s the same advice you would give a friend during a challenging time.)

Embrace your uniqueness, and let it be the foundation of your self-acceptance journey. By respecting, owning, connecting with, and being kind to yourself, you unlock the door to a happier and more fulfilling life. It’s time to ROCK thru to happier living by accepting yourself because you are freakin’ awesome!
