ROCK thru with more art and awe experiences

ABUNDANT LIVING SERIES

by Lee Havenga | December 5, 2024

Have you ever stood before a piece of art and felt your world expand? Art and awe experiences hold the power to connect us deeply to ourselves and to the vast mysteries that inspire wonder. Dacher Keltner, a psychologist at the University of California, Berkeley, defines awe as “the emotion we experience when we encounter vast mysteries that we don’t understand.” Art and visual design, recognized by Keltner as one of the eight wonders of life, serves as a powerful gateway to awe, offering a deeper connection to ourselves and a richer understanding of our emotions and experiences.

A Personal Art and Awe Experience

I’ll never forget the moment I saw the Georges Seurat painting “A Sunday on La Grande Jatte” in person. Its size alone was staggering, but it was the thousands of tiny dots, each deliberate and vibrant, that took my breath away. Standing there, I felt awe—moved by the sheer craftsmanship and imagination it took to create something so expansive yet intimate. Moments like these are quintessential “art and awe experiences,” showing us how deeply art can connect us to ourselves, stirring emotions and thoughts we didn’t know existed.

Why Connection Through Art Matters

The ROCK thru principle of Connection emphasizes understanding what moves us and why. Awe through art deepens our Connection to ourselves, fostering a sense of self-awareness and growth. Immersion in art and awe experiences creates opportunities for introspection, allowing us to recognize the emotions and ideas that resonate within us.

Keltner’s research shows that awe:

  • Expands perspective, making us feel part of a larger whole.
  • Boosts well-being and reduces stress.
  • Inspires curiosity and creativity.

“A true artist is not one who is inspired, but one who inspires others.”

― Salvador Dali

CONNECTION

Apply it

Three ways to cultivate art and awe experiences

1. Immerse Yourself in the Details (10 minutes)

Inspired by Keltner’s framework, choose a piece of art—whether in a museum or online—that speaks to you. Spend 10 minutes observing it closely:

  • Note its colors, textures, and patterns.
  • Reflect on how it makes you feel.
  • Ask yourself why it resonates with you.

This focused attention turns any viewing into a personal art and awe experience, uncovering hidden emotions and strengthening your self-awareness.

2. Create Intentional Art Viewing Rituals (15 minutes)

Borrow a technique from psychologist Ellen Winner, who advocates for “mindful art appreciation.” Dedicate time to engage with art intentionally:

  • Visit a gallery or explore virtual museum tours.
  • Journal your thoughts after viewing.
  • Consider how the experience aligns with your values or aspirations.

By turning these moments into intentional art and awe experiences, you deepen your understanding of what moves you.

3. Explore Nature-Inspired Art (5 minutes)

Many artists draw on the natural world to evoke awe, much like Ernst Haeckel’s intricate depictions of marine life. Studies show that engaging with such art can elicit the same physiological benefits as being in nature, including reduced stress and increased creativity.

Incorporating nature-inspired pieces into your space allows you to access awe daily. These pieces serve as consistent reminders of the power of art and awe experiences.

Let art be your portal to awe, awakening the mysteries of life and the beauty within yourself. ROCK thru your journey to Connection by discovering awe in the art around you, one mindful moment at a time.
