ROCK thru with more collective movement
ABUNDANT LIVING SERIES

Collective movement—like swaying with thousands at a concert or chanting in unison during a march—has the power to create awe, connecting us to something larger than ourselves. By leveraging the ROCK thru principle of Connection, we can intentionally tap into the transformative potential of collective movement to foster feelings of wonder, empathy, and unity. According to Dacher Keltner, a psychologist at the University of California, Berkeley, awe arises in eight different ways. One of them is when we encounter vast mysteries beyond our understanding, leading to deeper empathy and Connection with others. Whether through synchronized dancing, team sports, or shared rituals, collective movement creates a profound sense of togetherness that uplifts our well-being and reduces stress.
How Collective Movement Evokes Awe
The feeling of awe in collective movement stems from what sociologist Émile Durkheim termed “collective effervescence,” a heightened emotional state experienced in group settings where synchronized action fosters a sense of unity. Durkheim found this effect common in religious rituals, but it extends to secular activities like concerts or community sports. This shared rhythm aligns individuals mentally and physically, opening the door to awe.
“We were born to unite with our fellow men, and to join in community with the human race.”
— Marcus Tullius Cicero
CONNECTION

Apply it
Apply It: Three Ways to Experience Awe in Collective Movement
- Join a Group Activity with Synchrony Participate in activities like a community dance class, yoga or breathwork session, or team sport. Look for events where synchronization—moving or acting in unison—is key.
- Attend Live Music Events Concerts and festivals are perfect for collective movement. Take a moment to immerse yourself in these shared rhythms and note the awe that arises.
- Engage in Ritualistic Group Practices Consider joining communal rituals like meditative walking circles, spiritual chants or prayers, or even group runs. Activities like these evoke collective effervescence and offer profound emotional rewards, fostering awe through shared intention.
When we move together—physically or in spirit—we tap into something far more significant than ourselves. This sense of Connection through collective movement can ignite awe, reminding us that we are part of a beautifully interconnected world. As Keltner’s research suggests, awe shifts our perspective, fostering empathy, Connection, and a richer, more abundant life.
ROCK thru with more awe in collective movement by finding ways to connect with others, one shared step or intention at a time.
