ROCK thru life with more fun
ABUNDANT LIVING SERIES
by Lee Havenga | June 29, 2024
As children, play was an integral part of our daily lives, our primary mode of exploration and learning. But as we transitioned into adulthood, the demands of life often overshadowed the joy of play. Instead of belly laughs, we settle for a quick “LOL” typed out on a screen, and our leisure time is filled with micro-doses of entertainment. This shift not only deprives us of the inherent benefits of play but also takes a toll on our health and well-being. Research has shown that play offers many benefits, including increased trust, empathy, resilience, and even immune system benefits. Yet, when we think of carving out time for play, many of us may experience a wave of anxiety or dismiss it as frivolous.
According to Dr. Stuart Brown, founder of the National Institute of Play, play is defined as “time spent without purpose.” We’ve become so accustomed to prioritizing productivity and busyness that the idea of engaging in purposeless activities feels foreign or even indulgent. In this Abundant Living series article, we’ll explore how to reintegrate play into our lives using the four ROCK thru principles: Respect, Ownership, Connection, and Kindness. It’s time to reclaim the joy of play and reap its transformative benefits. Let’s ROCK thru and rediscover the rejuvenating power of having more fun!
Play may seem like a luxury in our hectic lives, but it’s essential for our well-being.
Don’t forget to enjoy the simple and silly pleasures!
RESPECT

Apply it
Give yourself permission to play. Recognize that you are valuable, unconditionally, and deserving of moments of joy and fun.
1. Set boundaries
Establish boundaries around your playtime and prioritize it just like any other important commitment. Whether it’s scheduling a weekly game night with friends or dedicating an hour each day to a hobby you love, setting boundaries communicates to yourself and others that play is a non-negotiable part of your life. This reinforces the message of self-worth and prioritizes your well-being.
2. Embrace imperfection
Let go of perfectionism and embrace the joy of imperfection in your play. Allow yourself to make mistakes, try new things, and laugh at yourself along the way. By embracing imperfection, you create a safe space for experimentation and creativity, fostering a sense of freedom and authenticity.
OWNERSHIP

Apply it:
Take Ownership of your playtime by actively seeking out play activities. Reminisce about carefree activities from your past and make time for them in your present.
3. Create a different kind of playlist
Compile a list of activities that bring you joy and relaxation, ranging from simple pleasures like walking in nature to more adventurous pursuits like trying a new hobby or sport. A playlist lets you quickly reference activities that resonate with you at different moments, ensuring you always have playful exploration options.
4. Schedule play time
Treat your playtime with the same importance as other commitments by scheduling regular play dates with yourself or loved ones. Whether it’s a weekly game night, a dance party in your living room, or a solo adventure exploring a new neighborhood, scheduling play dates ensures that you prioritize fun.
CONNECTION

Apply it:
Foster a deeper Connection with yourself through play. Tune into your inner child and engage in activities that bring you pure joy and delight.
5. Practice mindful play
Approach play with a sense of mindfulness, fully immersing yourself in the present moment and savoring the sensory experience. Whether it’s feeling the warmth of the sun on your skin, lying in the grass, or losing yourself in the rhythm of a favorite song, practicing mindful play allows you to deepen your connection to yourself and the world around you.
6. Engage in playful self-expression
Allow yourself to express your creativity and individuality through play. Whether through art, music, dance, or storytelling, find ways to express yourself authentically and without judgment. Engaging in playful self-expression fosters a more profound sense of self-awareness and self-acceptance, strengthening your connection to yourself.
KINDNESS

Apply it:
Be kind to yourself and others by prioritizing play. Remember that play isn’t just fun—it’s essential for your well-being and overall happiness.
7. Celebrate small wins
Acknowledge and celebrate your efforts to prioritize play in your life, no matter how small. Whether it’s taking a few minutes to engage in a playful activity or dedicating an entire day to relaxation and fun, celebrate each step you take towards incorporating more fun into your life. Celebrating small wins cultivates a sense of self-compassion and encourages continued growth and exploration.
8. Share the joy
Spread Kindness and positivity by inviting others to join you in playful activities. Whether it’s organizing a group outing, sharing your favorite games or hobbies with friends, or simply sharing stories and laughter, sharing the joy of play with others strengthens bonds and fosters a sense of community and connection.
By applying the principles of Respect, Ownership, Connection, and Kindness, you can infuse play back into your life and reap its countless benefits. Remember, play isn’t just for kids—it’s vital to a fulfilling and meaningful life. So embrace your inner child and ROCK thru with more fun and play today!
