ROCK thru when life feels like a climb | Kindness to others

by Lee Havenga | June 8, 2023

It may seem counterintuitive, but science has shown that helping others during our own adversity brings about undeniable benefits. Even when we’re low on energy or mind space, there are simple yet meaningful ways to show Kindness. From offering a genuine smile or holding the door for someone to leaving a kind note or expressing gratitude, these acts require minimal effort but have a profound impact. Research suggests that acts of Kindness trigger the release of feel-good hormones, such as oxytocin, boosting our mood and overall well-being. Shifting our focus towards helping others allows us to find purpose and connection beyond our own challenges. Here are 9 simple and nearly effortless ways to make a positive difference. In less than a minute, you can make someone’s day better and uplift your spirits so that we can all ROCK thru life.

KINDNESS

In lifting others, we gain the strength to rise above our own struggles.

Apply it

1. Hold the elevator

If you see someone rushing to catch the elevator, hold the doors open for them. It only takes a few seconds but can make their day easier.

2. Leave an anonymous note

Leave a sticky note with a positive message or encouragement in a public place like a restroom or a community bulletin board. It can even be the words that you need to hear. Someone else may need them too.

3. Share a smile

Smile at strangers as you go about your day. It requires minimal effort but can create a ripple effect of positivity.

4. Offer to help

If you notice someone struggling with a heavy load or a difficult task, offer to lend a hand. Small gestures like helping someone carry their groceries or assisting a coworker with a simple task can make a big difference.

5. Practice active listening

Show genuine interest and empathy by actively listening, asking follow-up questions, and showing understanding.

6. Say “thank you”

Take a moment to express gratitude to those who provide you service, such as the barista who makes your morning coffee or the delivery person who brings your packages. A simple “thank you” goes a long way.

7. Leave a positive review

If you receive exceptional service from a business, take a few minutes to leave a positive review online. It helps boost their reputation and may attract more customers.

8. Offer a sweet treat

Surprise a coworker or a neighbor with a small treat, like a homemade cookie, a piece of fruit, or my favorite, chocolate. It’s a simple way to brighten someone’s day.

9. Share uplifting content

When you come across inspiring quotes, articles, or videos, share them on your social media platforms or with friends and family. It spreads positivity effortlessly and might inspire others.

Remember, Kindness doesn’t always have to be grand or time-consuming. You just need to recognize a need and act. Even these small acts can make a significant impact on yourself and others. Keep ROCKing thru life’s challenges! ~ XO, Lee

Bonus: Even though this act of Kindness will take more than 60 seconds, it can be a great way to help yourself while helping others.

10. Share your resources

Have extra clothes, books, or household items you no longer need? Donate them to a local shelter or charity. It declutters your space which may give you a brighter outlook and also helps someone in need.
